Mike Henderson (MR H) Scriptwriter and Performer

Mr H is Mike Henderson, a local playwright and performer Based in Suffolk UK. After a successful career in teaching he now dedicates his time to devising entertaining and amusing mystery dramas. These are performed as radio plays with actors reading from scripts. Two characters appear in every play – the detective, Inspector Richard ‘Dickie’ Ticker and his over enthusiastic partner Sergeant Sprockett.

Mike grew up in Trimley attending the local schools. At eighteen he left to study hotel management at Llandrillo Technical College in North Wales, where he made many friends and ran a hotel in Nefyn, doubling as head chef. He returned to Felixstowe in 1980 and took up a career in liner shipping management with a forward-thinking shipping company. During this time he dealt with customers and shipping authorities across the world and was actively involved during the Falklands crisis when one of the ships was commandeered to serve as a helicopter hanger. Long hours ordering and purchasing containers to house this equipment, sleeping in the office over the course of a long seven days. He left the shipping firm in 1987 and worked briefly as a manager for a timber mill, returning to shipping with P and O in 1988 before deciding to return to full-time education in 1989.

Mike packed up his house into storage and left for a degree course in Drama and Theatre Studies with Primary Education at North Riding College in Scarborough. The college had a strong connection with Alan Ayckbourne’s Theatre in the Round and during the four year course Mike was involved in productions there as well as a management role in the National Student Drama Festival which was held annually in the coastal town. Mike performed in a Samuel Beckett workshop for professional actors. He also entered a play into the festival whilst studying in Leeds.

Mike graduated with an Honours degree in 1993 and began his teaching career at a large primary school in Kesgrave. He briefly taught at secondary level at Farlingaye High School but returned to primary education where he remained until he retired in 2021.

Mike is married and lives in Felixstowe with his wife Kerry and daughter Niamh. He has performed locally for over forty years in amateur productions as well appearing on stage as half of a successful comedy double act, hosting two comedy clubs in the 1990’s where he introduced many of the now famous comedians seen on television and on the comedy circuit.

As part of Upfront Productions Mike originally wrote the murder mystery plays to generate income to finance full productions, however these plays have a life of their own and are in demand for local fund raising and party events.

The plays are written to allow any group to perform with minimal set up – just chairs for the performers and microphones if required. They also come with printed information/ accusation sheets for use in audience involvement and posters to advertise the productions.

Also available through this site are a selection of children’s plays which Mike wrote especially for the  classes he taught during his career. They are written to give the widest opportunities to young children of all abilities the chance to go on the stage and perform. They have been tried, tested and enjoyed by audiences throughout the last thirty years.
